Two-Way Radio IP Ratings - What Do They Mean?

Post Date: Tuesday, July 11, 2017

The “IP” in IP Rating refers to Ingress Protection, which defines how airtight a radio enclosure is from dust particles (solids) and moisture (liquids). In other words, the extent to which a radio enclosure is sealed to prevent solids and liquids from entering the radio and destroying the circuitry. The rating system was developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which is an international standards organization comprised of electrical engineers, academic and industrial experts.

An IP Rating is comprised of two digits based on a standard measurement chart developed by the IEC for Intrusion Protection. The first digit represents the level of particle protection (Rating Levels 0 to 6), while the second digit represents the level of moisture protection (Rating Levels 0 to 8). The IP Ratings Chart below identifies the levels and protection provided with each rating.

INGRESS PROTECTION (IP) RATINGS

SOLIDS (FIRST DIGIT) LIQUIDS (SECOND DIGIT)
0 No protection 0 No protection
1 Protected from objects greater than 50mm 1 Protected against dripping water or condensation
2 Protected from objects greater than 12mm 2 Protected against water spray 15 degrees from vertical
3 Protected from objects greater than 2.5mm 3 Protected against water spray 60 degrees from vertical
4 Protected from objects greater than 1mm 4 Protected against water spray from all directions
5 Protected against large dust particles 5 Protected against low pressure jets of water
6 Totally protected against dust 6 Protrected against temporary flooding
N/A 7 Protected against immersion from 6 inches to 3.3 feet
N/A 8 Protected against long periods of immersion

What is an IP67 rating?

An IP Rating of 67 provides total protection against dust and immersion in up to 3.3 feet of water. Most commercial two-way radio applications will seek an IP Rating (both digits) of 5 or higher. However, it will depend on your industry and operating environment. Understanding the IP Rating system is significant because it ensures the safety of the device, but more importantly, the people operating the device. So, when reviewing two-way radio models for rent or purchase, be sure to consider the IP Rating required for the operating environment, to protect the device and its users.

Prairie Mobile Communications offers a variety of two-way radios from well-known and reputable manufacturers (Kenwood, Motorola, Icom, etc.), with medium to high IP Ratings. Our Radio Sales Consultants and Technical Experts would be pleased to discuss applicable IP Ratings for your business and the safety of your people.
